花木兰（陈妙瑛 饰）的父亲花弧（罗家英 饰）因为偶然之中撞破了朗氏父子探望枉法的罪行而遭到了后者的迫害，被列入了剿灭突厥的征兵名单之中。花弧年老体弱此行注定有去无回，而家中唯一的男丁木棣（韦家雄 饰）亦只是一介孱弱书生，无奈之下，花木兰只得男扮女装，替父从军。 军中，花木兰遇见了贺高升（王喜 饰），这一对欢喜冤家整日吵吵闹闹笑料百出，然而，在木兰的真实身份险些要暴露之时，亦是善良的贺高升帮助她度过了难关。除了要隐藏身份，花木兰还得应付郎氏父子两人派出的各路卧底刺客。背腹受敌之际，聪明勇敢的木兰屡建奇功，太宗更是将御妹郎小小（傅明宪 饰）许配给木兰为妻。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
